The Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) is a central player in global polar research. It coordinates polar research in Germany and provides the logistics necessary for expeditions to extreme regions, including the wide range of periglacial and permafrost landscapes in the Arctic and Antarctic.
The Potsdam Research Section (Director: Prof. H.-W. Hubberten, coordinator of PAGE21) of the AWI has historically focused solely on permafrost and periglacial research in the Arctic and the Antarctic. It is active in permafrost research in Russia through its permanent station in the Lena Delta, Siberia, and also in Alaska, Canada, Greenland, and the Norwegian Svalbard Archipelago.
The Research Section hosts more than 40 scientists, technical employees and students working exclusively on permafrost and periglacial research topics (geochemistry, hydrochemistry, hydrology, energy and carbon balance, microbiology, astrobiology, coastal erosion, permafrost modelling, geophysics, remote sensing, sedimentology, paleogeography, isotope geology, and limnology), making it the largest institution wisconsin cash advance payday loans investigating permafrost in Western Europe.
