The LSCE institute is a joint research unit of the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS-INSU) and the Commissariat à l'Energie Atomique (CEA), two major funding agencies in France. The LSCE  is part of the  Institut Pierre Simon Laplace (IPSL) in Paris and covers numerous fields of research related to climate and environment.

The experience and qualification of LSCE researchers relevant to the project comprises a high degree of expertise in the retrieval of land surface temperature from satellite observations, and the development of process- based land surface models to quantify sources and sinks of greenhouse gases, with a specific focus on cold processes and carbon in permafrost. The LSCE researchers play a leading role in the development of Earth System modelling in France as part of the IPSL.
